Tango Porteño – Dinner & Tango Show in Buenos Aires

Tango Porteño is one of the tango houses you can visit during your tour of the city. It is located in a luxurious building that was once a movie theater owned by the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This old and beloved theater, called the Metro, is situated right in the city center, just a few steps from the Obelisco. Its location makes it a central spot for enjoying tango, and it is very close to the main hotels in the city.

In general, the view is excellent from all locations. The tables are set where the theater seats used to be, culminating in a large stage that undoubtedly draws attention and sets the mood for enjoying a great show.

The food is very good, with a variety of options in a three-course menu. We chose the classic Argentine empanadas to start, followed by a wonderful bife de chorizo accompanied by potatoes (a main dish that stands out especially). To finish, we enjoyed a mix of Argentine desserts, among which the flan with cream and dulce de leche, the cheese with quince paste, and the ice cream are highlights.

The show begins with an evocation of the 1940s and the origins of tango in the neighborhoods of La Boca and San Telmo, the milonga, and the arrabal. It follows a nearly perfect path through the most famous and internationally recognized tangos. The repertoire includes Caminito, La Cumparsita, Volver, and Por una cabeza, among others. The production is ambitious, with six dance couples who stand out notably, and a high-level male vocalist. There are significant costume changes and a special segment dedicated to folklore, featuring malambo and Argentine bombos.

The orchestra is excellent, composed of two violins, a double bass, two bandoneons, and a piano, accompanying the show at all times with live music, culminating in a special dedicated to Astor Piazzolla, which is fascinating.

Without a doubt, Tango Porteño is an excellent option to enjoy tango in Buenos Aires.
